The distance (in essence and being)

Between God and humans is so great

God is the Creator

Thus, being created, man can't merit anything from God

The solution to that is in the covenant

God voluntarily chose to reach down to mortal man

So, in the Garden of Eden

God promised Adam eternal life

On condition that he perfectly obeyed his commands

Adam was not to eat of the forbidden tree, lest he died

Unfortunately, he failed

He sinned against God through disobedience

Thereby losing the reward of eternal life

After this, God promised eternal life

Through the perfect obedience of the last Adam

Everyone is in Adam

Either in the first one or the last one

But in the last Adam, sinners are justified
