Lyrics
In John 14:12
Jesus promises that whoever believes in him
Will also do the works that he did
And even greater works than these
Because he was going to the Father
What did Jesus mean by these words
For instance, we know Jesus raised the dead
And walked on water
Does he mean that we're going to raise more corpses than him
Or walk on water more often than he did
How should we interpret this verse
First, bear in mind that this promise is for all believers
Just as the assurance of eternal life
Goes to anyone who believes in Jesus
Likewise, every believer is here being promised
That they'll do greater works than Jesus
Second, what works did Christ do
According to John 14:11
Jesus performed miracles
Which proved he was the Son of God
Therefore, what Jesus means is that every believer will do works
That will point back to him as the Son of God
The Savior of His people
However, these works performed by believers
Aren't necessarily signs and wonders
Bear in mind that the Bible doesn't contradict itself
We can't conclude from this verse
That every Christian should do miracles
Based on 1 Corinthians 12:29-30
We don't all possess gifts of healing
Nor gifts to work miracles
Hence, the works greater than these
Performed by every Christian
Is anything that God may use in our lives
To the praise of his name as God
Matthew 5:16 says
"In the same way, let your light shine before others
So that they may see your good works
And give glory to your Father who is in heaven."
Third, Jesus grounds his promise
That believers will do greater works
In the event of his ascension to the Father
His words, "...because I am going to the Father,"
Allude to his death, resurrection, ascension to heaven
And the sending of the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost
Therefore, according to Christ
What distinguishes the period we're living in
From his period or the Old Testament
Is his finished work of redemption on the cross
His death, resurrection, ascension to heaven
And the sending of the Holy Spirit
Qualifies our works to be greater
We serve looking back to the finished work
Of salvation of Christ on the cross
Whereas before Jesus died, rose
Ascended to heaven, and sent the Holy Spirit
They looked forward to the hope of his finished work
Of salvation on the cross.
This verse (John 14:12)
Is not mandating every Christian to perform miracles
If that were the case, who among us has ever managed
To miraculously multiply food for a gathered crowd
