As a ruminant they have a four

To stand on soft snow they distribute

Reindeer spend most of their life in cold conditions

So they have developed special adaptations

Their hollow overcoat traps heat, while their undercoat's woolly

Heating up the air they breathe in, their nose contains warm blood flowing

They're the only species of deer known

Where both males and females will grow

Antlers which first start to appear when they

Males will lock their antlers and fight

To attract females for mating rights

That's at the end of autumn

The antlers of females fall off in the summer

While adult males lose theirs in early winter

And young males lose theirs in springtime, every year they grow back fine

Under velvet a nice soft fur, which helps to protect their antlers

Females will gestate for about seven and a half

Months and they typically give birth to only the one calf

At a time which often can weigh up to nine kilograms

After just one hour of life they are able to stand

They start eating solid food within a week

At six months old they are fully weened

Reindeer are social animals living in herds

That can include hundreds of thousands of members

In the winter herds will travel, south for thousands of miles

To find tasty food like lichen, foraging across horizons
