Lyrics
It was a cold morning in the middle of November
He was lost in thought
But about what he can't remember
He was walking to work
At about a quarter to nine
When he looked up and saw her face
For the very last time
She was a sweet girl
She was nice and naive
She had a big smile
Like you wouldn't believe
She kept her clothes clean and her hair so neat
She helped out with babysitting for the families on her street
He was an edgy guy with tattoos on his face
He had a fast Porsche
Loved the thrill of the chase
He boxed to stay fit and keep his rage in check
He'd lived a misspent youth and now the stage is set
Well she was working one day at the library in town
She was scanning some books and there was no one around
As he swaggered past the window he did a double take
He stopped in his tracks because she blew him away
He took a bold move
Went in to say hi
She giggled
Who are you?
A little bit shy
He said the name's Mikhael
But you can call me Mike
I just had to stop and ask you what you're doing tonight
He picked her up from her parents house
She'd been round for her tea
Her dad was looking out the window
Thinking who the hell is he
But wincing through scepticism they smiled and waved
Then grumbled and tutted and just hoped it was a phase
Mike took her to a bar where they relaxed and chatted
He was oozing charisma
She was feeling attracted
A couple of cocktails and it was time to go home
I've got work tomorrow so I should probably go
Mike was hesitant cos he was having such a good time
She could feel the piercing excitement from his eyes
But she insisted that she needed some sleep
So he dropped her at her door with a peck on the cheek
He was gonna suggest a coffee but before he could speak
She said I'll see you again
Let's reconvene next week
Maybe meet up on Wednesday and we can go for a walk
We'll go somewhere quiet where we can properly talk
A few years later it's all gone west
Every time they were together they were constantly stressed
They'd been rocky for months and prone to flipping their lids
Together eight years it was hitting the skids
She'd always dreamed of getting married having a couple of kids
But they weren't even living together because he wouldn't commit
And every time they tried to talk it out they hit stalemate
No compromise or any healthy debate
They were two different people with a rift between them
All the arguing and shouting at each other
Had seen them become a husk of a couple with nothing shared in their life
Mike decided to throw the dice one last time
Well it was late at night when he knocked on her door
He said I'm ready to sort things out once and for all
I'm deadly serious
We'll not go far
Get your shoes on and come with me
I'll warm up the car.
They took a long drive
Right out to the woods
Went for a short walk
He pulled up his hood
It was nearly pitch black and there was no one around
The only sound was the cold twigs snapping on the ground
They carried on walking til they got to a clearing
Both visibly trembling as their target was nearing
She could tell from his face that his emotions were growing
And then she started to weep
As she realised where they were going
He stopped
Shone his torch
And said here it is
It was the tree from the scene of their very first kiss
What went wrong
He whispered with sadness
As he struggled to comprehend the last eight years madness
Remember that feeling when we stood under this tree
Like the world slowed down and it was just you and me
I was stunned into silence by the beauty I saw
We were young back then but nothing had ever mattered more
And now we're broken battered bruised bitter twisted and sore
And as he carried on speaking
He realised that she was bored
The spark was dead
She'd heard it all before
Now they were back in the car and he was driving in silence
Brewing and stewing and asking God for some guidance
The tension was tangible
The pressure was palpable
He was driving like a guy who might be losing his license
They somehow got back and parked outside of her flat
He followed her to the door and as she reached for the latch
She turned and said
Come in
Let's pop off a cork
I think we both know that we need to talk
