Lyrics
There are things sometimes I wish I'd told you
But I've never liked to talk about the war
We lied about our ages and although we were courageous
We didn't know what was in store
Won't you stay with me because I feel so cold
And I don't believe I'll see you the dawn
And if you don't mind I'd like a hand to hold
And treat me gentle in the morning
At first we had to leave Kokoda
I saw a young man take a bullet on the way
I hardly knew the bloke but I hear the words he spoke
They still haunt me to this day
Won't you stay with me because I feel so cold
And I don't believe I'll see you the dawn
And if you don't mind I'd like a hand to hold
And treat me gentle in the morning
So we carried him into the mountains
Gave him water and some morphine for the pain
Made him up a makeshift bed sowed him up with cat gut thread
Then he asked me once again
Won't you stay with me because I feel so cold
And I don't believe I'll see you the dawn
And if you don't mind I'd like a hand to hold
And treat me gentle in the morning
He lasted just a few more hours
We were there to give him comfort through it all
We laid him down to rest, placed his rifle on his chest
Sang old Lang Syne as I recall
Won't you stay with me because I feel so cold
And I don't believe I'll see you the dawn
And if you don't mind I'd like a hand to hold
And treat me gentle in the morning
Perhaps one day you walk Kokoda
And the track it's self will test you to the core
But you won't wake in fright from a mountain gun at night
So spare a thought for those before
Won't you stay with me because I feel so cold
And I don't believe I'll see you the dawn
And if you don't mind I'd like a hand to hold
And treat me gentle in the morning
