That can lead very easily to misuse, abuse, and addiction

Prescription drug use is on the rise

In the United States, for all people ages 15 to 64

The leading cause of death due to an injury is unintentional poisoning

No, it's not motor vehicle accidents, but accidental poisoning

Many of these deaths can be attributed to the misuse and abuse of prescription drugs

The most commonly abused prescription drugs are painkillers, sedatives, stimulants, and antidepressants

Many of these drugs are obtained from family members or friends

Sometimes without their consent, and sometimes in exchange for money

Always take your medication exactly as it is prescribed by your doctor

Never change your dosage without talking to your doctor first

Carefully monitor your supply of prescription medication

And always keep it in a safe, secure location

Talk to your family members about the dangers of prescription drugs

Don't give a prescription if it is no longer of immediate usefulness to you

Most pharmacies will safely dispose of old or expired prescriptions for you free of charge

Lastly, if you or someone you know are abusing prescription drugs

There are many recovery resources available at little or no cost

These resources can be found at the social services website
