Here's to the town built on iron and steel

The mills they're all gone now returned to green fields

The billet, plate and blast and the big chimney stack

They've torn them all down and they're not coming back

Here's to the men and the women who came

Drawn to the town just like moths round a flame

Each had their own tale to tell or conceal

They looked to the future with their hopes and their dreams

Here's to the miner, his laughter has ceased

And the pit-head's removed for a museum piece

Away from the sun, in the dark underground
