When I was just a little boy, my mom taught me religion

Told me all the rules to keep to get in good with God

Say lots of prayers, don't kill or swear; don't lie or steal or cheat

On Sunday get to Mass, and on Friday don't eat meat

I prayed to lots of statues, I lit my share of candles

You see, the Bible says that we can never work our way to Heaven

In fact it says our best-est deeds are filthy rags to God

It says the just are saved by grace, not works, lest they should boast

And that's fine with me 'cause I've had my fill of scrambled eggs and toast

I don't like lies, and I don't frauds, and I don't like Man's Religion

I don't like folks who'd have me hope where there's no hope to find

The Bible says I'm saved by grace, not works, lest I should boast
