Lyrics
11/7/40 was an ordinary morning
November the 7th was no ordinary day
A grey and breezy sky blowing above the Puget sound
Up and down and side to side, a bridge across was twisting in the wind
Riding to the bridge in my 1930 Studebaker
Tubby riding in the back to keep me company
The floor began a tilting and the whole world started shaking
Stepped out of the car, fell on my face against the road
The sound of cracking concrete, I am crawling on my belly
My hands are scraped, my knees are bleeding, I can't take too much more
Finally up on the highland, this is my salvation
Looking on the bridge, that dog is still inside the car
Tubby, we can't stay here
Tubby, let's go home
I thank my lord and savior with my feet on solid ground
As the rhythm of my heartbeat slowly comes under control
Never in my life have I been this afraid of dying
The Tacoma Narrows bridge becomes a story now to tell
42 miles an hour doesn't sound so fast
But 42's enough to bring the whole thing down at last
With heavy heart I walk away aware that I am bound
To tell my girls that Tubby's at the bottom of the sound
Tubby, I tried to save him
But Tubby he wouldn't come
Tubby, now I sing the blues for Tubby
Tubby's never coming home
Never coming home
Mr. Mosieff was a man who left his mark upon the nation
A span of many miles could be so beautiful and strong
But failure has a way of taking us so unexpected
The best laid plans of mice and men so often go awry
42 miles an hour doesn't sound so fast
But 42's enough to bring the whole thing down at last
I thank my lord and savior with my feet on solid ground
And now I have to tell my girls that Tubby's at the bottom of the sound
