In this, as in other things

I have often said, that very few can

From the worldly way enter the kingdom of heaven

The vast majority, before they go here

Must take up a work

By which they might strengthen themselves in piety

And show what kind of God it is that they worship

One gets one

Another another duty, all that we think

He needs to be tested

So, in order not to waste time any longer

Pay attention, and you will hear

What work is now assigned to you to do

You must go to Palestine

The long way costs you little effort

For lightened after death

Your foot became, therefore you walked unwearied

From Nazareth your journey must begin

Where the angel may proclaim the Savior

From there you go to Bethlehem

His birthplace, and now follow with zeal

Every trace that, while he lived

Among men, has been trodden by him

All in the same order

In which he himself trod it on earth

All as to the glory of the Lord

It is described in sacred history

And in every place you approach

What happened, must have before your eye

You with your Savior to Egypt go

You return to Jerusalem

To the temple, where he sacrifices turtledoves

So also to Cana, Nain, Bethany

Shechem, Gennesaret and Caesarea

Where he grants me with the keys of heaven

On the train to Jerusalem you follow

Along the banks of the Jordan. You stand at the city limits

At Jericho, when Bethphage hides itself

Enter the temple hall, which the Lord cleanses

And go every evening over the waves of Kidron

To the Mount of Olives, where you spend the night

The palace, which Caiaphas inhabited

You seek, and pursue the trail again

Which leads to Pilate from Herod

Then go to Golgotha, look sadly

The great tomb, which God has robbed you of

But see him then returned to life

When you have gone to Emmaus

Return to the city again, to hear

His words, when, despite closed doors

He reveals himself anew

And then let yourself be led to Galilee

To see him when he goes to heaven

And that's enough! If you have walked this way

Then your mind is most certainly changed

Then you have strengthened yourself in pious thoughts

Then come here only! When you knock at the gate

I come out and wait

That nothing more will hinder

That I bring you to the joy of heaven
