Lyrics
Take me back
To the days when we wake up to haze of the harmattan season
The fog from a distance is a clear indication of the jubilance to come
My heart skips in excitement like a custom officer over a consignment
The smell of the season fills the air as we breathe in the cold dried harmattan air amidst clenched teeth
The cold bites down on my lips as it splits not in hopes of a kiss but for blisters
The cold air brushes across my cheeks and the wind carries the rustled leaves as they rise in excitement like my heart
Take me back
To the days of road trips to the east as I bounce with excitement from the soon coming feast
The experience of traveling the murky red road of ore as the not so luxurious bus dances a not so luxury dance after going over a pothole
l watched in fascination the large mass of trees on the highways as the breeze slaps my face
I trace the number 2 with my fingertips from the dirty windows as my hands slips to silence my rumbling stomach if you get the innuendo
All the while my feeble mind filled with faces of the people in the village as I show off my new clothing items from the big city of Lagos! Ka m gosi fa na Umu eko a lota go… (the children from Lagos have arrived)
Take me back
To the village square as we watch in animation the masquerades in their costumes driving our imagination and fueling our trepidation
The gathering of cousins under the moonlight more than a dozen to tell folktales and folklores that left us both in awe and terror
Variety of food sprawled across the dining table unbothered about how it was provided we fought for the turkey as the pepper from the jerky splashes across our faces narrowly missing our eyes
Endless list of demands of needs and wants unable to understand any explanation that doesn't provide solution
Today,
I widen my nostrils in hopes to perceive that cold dried harmattan air that is no more there
Rather We now have rains in December, climate change no be anybodi mate
My heart no longer skips with excitement over the enlightenment that the road trips and adventure costs money; pressure ti wa!
The bills and billing that comes with adulthood I never understood; ironu ti fe fo oju everybody
We keep up with cousins over social media, as time gets greedier
Gatherings with free food have reduced because the fear of January is necessary
Oju lasan cannot do detty December else when school fees calls you go explain taya no evidence
However, In this hell hole, here is to some reviving the holiday spirit of love, hope and joy in crumbs
Shelling out good stuff to bring people out of their shells without them having to drop a shilling.
Here is to you putting smiles on the faces of many without billings to ensure that the holiday spirit is not quenched despite being drenched in December.
No matter the condition, be the reason for a Christmas season without tears.
