Lyrics
I walk along a smoky isle, between two rows of slots
Underneath casino lights, I'd come to call my spot
A man stopped me as I stepped inside said just a five will do
Give me bills for food and I'll spill a simple tale to you
John Sargent was a betting man, reeked of cigarettes and sin
He fell into that blackjack pit, and he never came out again
Lost his chance of getting free when he got his first win
Spent his days in the smoky haze, with blackjack chips and gin
Because he danced with queens and aces, till his feet were black and blue
That just means he couldn't run when the devil come and get what's due
When he started betting he was a man of 22
That dealer dealt him kings and aces four in just one shoe
He made a thousand dollars and he spent it on one deal
The aces split, he got tens when he hit and his miserable fate was sealed
But he never had good fortune come and smile on him again
Didn't count his losses, was counting on just one big win
And he never got that money back, because he never lost his hope
Even when the debt collectors rearranged his bones
Because he danced with queens and aces, till his feet were black and blue
That just means he couldn't run when that devil come and get what's due
Just like that the man was gone, my five dollars in his shirt
I went in and played cards, and lost the money that I'd earned
In dismay I left, I felt that dealer was a cheat
My thoughts were interrupted by a commotion on the street
A crowd had gathered screaming a shot rang out amongst the throng
And away he ran some mobster man, my five dollars in his palm
I asked a lady, "what in gods own name could it have been?
To cause so small a bill to be the root of all this sin"
She said "It's just John Sargent, never seen him win a dime
Probably took another loan, tried to win just one last time
See he'd walk around this corner scamming suckers for their bills
And say it was for food, I'm none to shocked that he got killed"
Because he danced with queens and aces, till his feet were black and blue
That just means he couldn't run when that devil come and get what's due
