Lyrics
In 1809 John Colter and John Potts
Paddled their canoe up the Jefferson
On the hunt for beaver sign and a good camping spot
Right when they reached the river bend
Blackfeet warriors swarmed the river bank
And motioned for them to surrender
Colter threw up his hands but Potts tempted his fate
And was riddled with arrows and dismembered
They ripped off Colter's clothes and took his moccasins
And told him to starting running for his life
Like a game of cat and mouse just dragging out the end
He took off with the Madison in his sights
Run Colter run
Run like the wind
Or set like a sun
Never to rise again
Run Colter run
Breathe every breath
And pray that you find the strength
To outrun death
He ran and ran like a deer from a wolf pack
Body aching bleeding head to toe
Born a swift runner he left the Blackfeet miles back
Save for a lone warrior holding his own
Out of breath Colter stopped and stretched his hands out
In surprise the warrior fell and dropped his spear
So Colter jumped upon him and stabbed him on the ground
And started running before the rest appeared
Run Colter run
Run like the wind
Or set like a sun
Never to rise again
Run Colter run
Breathe every breath
And pray that you find the strength
To outrun death
He jumped in the water and climbed in a beaver lodge
And hid there 'til the darkness finally fell
By the moonlight he went east for eleven days he walked
When he reached the trading post he had quite tale to tell
Run Colter run
Run like the wind
Or set like a sun
Never to rise again
Run Colter run
Breathe every breath
And pray that you find the strength
To outrun death
Run for your life
Till you can't go no more
Run Colter run
Outrun death
