On the importance of numbers

When you're on the path to becoming financially free

Or financially wealthy

I know some of you are in financial trouble listening to this

It's like being overweight, you don't want to step on the scale

The importance of numbers, at least it puts some reality

As to how overweight you are

By filling out your financial statement

You get to take a look at how badly in debt you are

Where the holes in your financial performance are

I really encourage people

I know sometimes numbers can be frightening

And that's why people don't look at it

Sometimes people don't like to look at their pay stub

Because they see how much is taken out of it

They'd rather go and spend the money

But accuracy is important

It begins with the discipline of finding out

Where am I today, measuring it

And then measuring where you want to be

Five years, ten years from now

That's the way you become wealthy

By confronting the numbers

Understanding what the numbers are trying to tell you

What's the story they're telling you?

And then the next question: how do you improve that?

As I said, money is just your ideas

It begins in your head

Just like losing weight

One of the best things about it

When you start to make progress, your weight starts to come off

And you start feeling better

It's really interesting

You want to do more

The first time you go to the gym and you're severely overweight

That's the worst day of your life

You climb on that scale, you see you've gained three pounds

From working out, another terrible moment in time

But after about 20 days or so

And you start to see some results

Suddenly you feel like going to the gym more

You want to work out harder

You get more enthusiastic

So I'll say to people

The numbers are very important, as well as the words

They're the measurement

They tell you where you are now

They tell the story of how you got here too

But they can also tell you the way out

And the more successful you become, the more successful you get

Success begets success and failure begets failure

That's why it's important to start

Even though the numbers don't look good today
