Lyrics
Okay, I don't want to go in detail, but I went through some pretty heavy combat in Afghanistan
But yeah, I felt a sense of guilt and, I don't know
This is the story of Eddie. At 18 he became a Marine, he was ready
Front line is a grunt, tough as they come. Not the type of dude to confront
But if it came to the punch, the type of man to never run
To some the killing was fun, I wouldn't know I never begun
His fingers wrapped to a gun, till the time he pulled one
The target as old as his son, but it had to be done
Cause if not, he would have been a father to none
How is that the cost of freedom, if a memory never leaves him
Closed his eyes to the sky, asked God why he made him this guy
Take a kid's life to keep his soldiers alive, but it's him or you that dies
Now you gotta hide, like that shit doesn't bury you inside
You a kid at the time, you can't legally find a drink to buy
The bullet in your chamber was legally fine, it's clipped to your mind, there is no rewind
Was this in the contract he signed? There's not always a silver line
Two tours he finished, but what he did replayed by the minute
So did he ever really finish? Back to the states he rushed
Only had a couple of days, it was never enough
Every time he left his loved ones, his soul was crushed
The back and forth could never adjust, from soldier to civ
One earth with two worlds he lived
After four years he quit, wanted to find peace again
Everyone thankful as a veteran, but to him the war was just to begin
PTSD would bring him to his knees, couldn't sleep haunted by dreams
His friends never seen what he'd seen
Scared to talk when they didn't understand what he means
But now they see him and wonder where's the old Eddie
But his wife was a ride or die, she'd been by his side the whole time
It kept him alive, she didn't need a uniform to be on the line
They found treatments and tools, friends that were never fools
Loved him since school, every day's a fight
Some days dark, some days light
Flag can never be white, surrender is never in sight
When he needs love he got it, hands held in our pocket
Clenched like a socket, we need to reach out to stop it
I'm thankful for service, but I'm nervous what it'd do to the person
Especially if the war's a diversion
So let it change your purpose, you a definition of courage
If it's peace you're searching, and everyday it's not working
Understand you're not alone, we need our soldiers to come home
Pick up the hotline, don't hang up the phone
When your mind roams, don't think of the chrome
We ain't looking for early gravestones, we keeping you dome
I'm kicking the real shit to keep it the realest
I've never served shit, I'm done with funerals from self-serving
Twenty two a day, from a hero to grave
We need to stop it, it's never too late
Slow the world down, listen to these words that I say
We in this together, forever we relate
The yesterday can still be a blessing today
March your steps, what we can't control
Will be the only reason a flag gets laid at your doorsteps
I'm catching my breath, I'm woke but laying to rest
Whatever it takes to beat the depressed
Pretty much just guilt after I got back from it
Some guys and the good guys didn't
Like most of the good friends, like, they didn't make it home
