The Lineman

He rose before the dawn to the rooster's early crow

With calloused hands he'd head for town through rain or heavy snow

He'd kiss his kids goodbye and whisper in their ears

I do this for you, my loves, to chase away your fears

His wife would cook the breakfast, the smell of bacon fried

She'd pack his lunch with tender care, with love that never died

The kids would wait impatiently for daddy to come home

His laughter filled the evening air, their hearts a joyful pulse

But one stormy night the lightning struck, a job he'd done so well

The lineman fell, his tools dropped down, he couldn't say farewell
