They came across the water on a promise and a prayer

Left their homes and all they knew just to breathe the freedom air

But the waves they took their dreams and the night swallowed their hope

In the darkness of that journey they were clinging to a rope

Oh the sea of tears it flows so wide

For the souls who sailed and the dreams that died

They gave all they had for a chance to survive

But in the cold cruel waters only pain arrived

The sun rose on the horizon but their hearts were sinking low

Paid their dues to the smugglers who said This is the way to go
