Crossing the Bridge

I'm crossing the bridge, the summer is fading. The birds on the bay are bobbing around

I'm watching a gull come up with a starfish. He struggles a while, then gobbles it down

I'm crossing the bridge, my eyes looking upward. Where fishermen's casts are caught on the line

They sway in the breeze up there on the gallows. The rusty old hooks are hanging like vines

I'm starting to see the gold in the grime. The wonder I lost came in with the tide

I'm lifting my gaze from out of the ditch. One step at a time I'm crossing the bridge

I'm crossing the bridge, the foam on the shoreline is dancing a jig as light as can be

The smell of the salt is stirring my body. The chill in my bones is beginning to flee
