Wolves

We thought we could play in tune from watching the dance

But our awkward steps were interrupted by a sound

A clamorous howling among the rustling of leaves

And the eyes in the trees to be seen all around

Their distant howls were disguised by the wind

While distracted in chatter, we missed the signs

Too slow to realize the wolves closing in

Too late to evade their stealth surprise

The sound of nighttime rustle

A howl breaks through the hum
