Diamonds Scattered on the Highway

We were driving down the highway late at night, looking for some place to eat

I was counting the stars on the horizon, you said something about the lousy music on the radio

It didn't matter to me, but I punched a dial and changed it to some boring country station

And you turned away from the window and said, it looks like there's a place up on the right

And as you pulled your jacket on, you said, that really wasn't what you meant to say

Two hours later we passed by a truck pulled over with an ambulance beside it

You said it's raining harder, as you stared out the window, tapping your fingers on the armrest

To the rhythm of the streetlights passing by on the far side of the highway

So you checked my speed and looked into the mirror

You said, someone's right behind us and the streetlights all shimmer
