Lyrics
Mr. Gray was a character
A carpenter by trade
But the skill he had along those lines
Was not often displayed
He worked just when he fancied
And he was fancy free
So he took the job that caught his eye
And let the others be
I recall he helped my grandpa
Rebuild the kitchen porch
They took it slow with lots of breaks
And stories back and forth
My grandma served their lunch outside
They ate it in the shade
She said she'd never seat that man
At a table that she'd laid
Though grandma always disapproved
My grandpa was his friend
They valued good companionship
As life drew near its end
They sat out in the elm's tree shade
So peaceful and serene
The finest two old characters
I think I've ever seen
White stubble was his whiskers
Brown nubbins were his teeth
He had wild bushy eyebrows
With bright blue eyes beneath
He smelled of beer and wood smoke
And dressed like some old bum
His philosophy was simple
I take things as they come
Mr. Gray was a character
A carpenter by trade
