I sent a featherless pigeon

I can still feel it's claws digging into my palm

Little white hearts, looking like bite marks

I fight hard

To watch its wings wade into the weathered sky

I wave goodbye

When will I see it again

Can I even listen to a bird?

Can I process what I've heard

Absorb it and really learn?

I'm terrified of it's eyes

And its relentless chirp

But I stay alert

I can't speak its language

I can't read it's pages

I can't feel it's anguish

I can't see the places its flown over

Roofs and skyscrapers its blown over

Shadowy theaters its shone over

Still haven't realized the show's over

I've arranged my whole week to delay withdrawal

But it drained like water from a seventeen ounce bottle

I'm voluntarily blind and I'm thrusting the throttle

Cracked the side mirror 'cause the past is getting nearer

And it smells awful

And the pigeon is nested in the backseat

Its presence will never relax me

Its riddles and ravings are taxing

Compensating for the feathers it's lacking
