Mirrors

People are mirrors

They reflect what you are and what you think you are

They offer opportunities to peer into your own eyes and confront yourself

Sometimes mirrors break and the pieces fall away and you get to see beyond

Maybe you looked too hard

Maybe you got caught up in your own reflection tried to shape yourself to what they wanted you to be

And one day the mirror cracked

I am learning that I can pick up the pieces

the fragments that shine the truest

and put them back together

One by one

I can even admire someone else's mirror and grow from looking through

But no one is allowed to glue their shards into my mosaic

I think women need to lift each other up more

It makes sense why we don't

We've been pitted against each other from an early age

We've been taught that male approval comes in the form of interest…attraction

and for some reason that should be what we strive for what success feels like

I remember we put on makeup in the bathroom hoping to catch an eye

to get them to laugh at our jokes to smile at us

We kept that like currency back then

And it just got messier in adulthood Meaner

Friends sabotaging friends to get the guy

A subtle glance across the dinner table

Slipping out before saying goodbye

When did start letting them pull us apart?

When did we start believing they define our worth?
