Lyrics
Night falls over my beautiful city like star lights
Memories of our old tribes, like the lanappe tribe
Music playing symphonic in the back alleys
By the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra
Bringing great vibes
The K-made music festival is held every year
At the Mid-Atlantic Center for Arts
Love my city, appreciate my culture
A black Colombian raised in a time of turmoil
Finding the beauty amidst the chaos
Jazz playing in the background
Industries of all new are bringing us back
To the early 20th century
Piano keys being stroked
Music by the pianist James P. Johnson
You can just feel the vibe in the air
Like lost in Translation
The sound of the saxophone teleports us
To another dimension
So much culture forgotten by time
Now it's my time to unearth forgotten gems
Like the Congress Hall where John Phillips
Also will perform
On the lawn of such a historic place
Like the K-made hotel
Can we take a moment in taking the culture
We aren't lost, we just got conditioned to forget
The beauties in the sound of the precious jazz
Historic places all around us
Like the Institute of Jazz
Studies in Newark
Which houses the largest library of jazz
And anything jazz related
Tears falls out of my eyes
Thinking of all that's taken for granted
Please give it up to our wonderful city
Filled with so much wonder
And yet it keeps giving more
Now back to my city
Union City
Which was originally inhabited
By the Muncie-speaking branch
Of the Lenape tribe
Native Americans
Who were encouraged by Henry Hunson
Hence the name of Hudson County
The first Cuban migrated in the 1940s
But Germans, Russians, and Greeks
And all sort of migrants were roaming already
My city was formed in 1925 to be exact
The first two waves of migrants
First came the Germans
Then my Spanish-speaking comrades
Loved my city
Growing up was a challenge
Being a migrant from Colombia
In the late 90s
Education was key
So I immersed myself in the culture
Incorporated myself
And became part of the environment
While some still held their old roots
I embraced my African heritage
Was never thought to back down
There was no one person
To make me frown upon my dark brown
I was taught to cherish every second
Because they're lost in the blink of an eye
I'd tear up thinking of all the sleepless nights
My mom was waiting out for me
To make my way back
But the streets had a grip on me
Like a lifestyle
My city's seen my ups and my downs
Seen the skyline from boulevard east
To reveal the wonders of New York City
Felt like a brave new world
Just opened up to such a brilliant young mind
Not knowing it would be more than a decade
Before I could realize
What I was longing for
When trials and tribulations
Were to be endured
But it's a brave new world
And endless possibilities
My goal is to inspire the next me
And I get lost on the way
To true awakening
My revelations
Transform a whole nation
I'm just beginning a new wave of re-education
My city has given me so much
And we have taken it for granted
I dedicate this symphony for nurturing
And see me through the dark into the light
Feels like every time we try to do right
Someone's trying to dim our light
I pray that everything you all wish on me
My lord multiplies
I give you blessings from the bottom of my heart
I've been broken and discarded
But never have I forgotten
That my mind is the garden in my heart
And my lord has made it his harvest
I hope all that you desire
Can be accomplished in this lifetime
Always keep a lifeline
And never close doors
You never know when that bridge you burn
Will be the last safe place to come across
Never take anything for granted
Karma comes and goes
And you never know when it's your time to go
Never shut your heart or close your eyes
Instead strive to inspire
Like my long lost love for jazz
Like my long lost love for jazz
