My mother, his ex-wife, met us at the reception desk

At the ICU while he couldn't speak or move

We said our peace in succession, I felt his presence in the room

As I apologized for every time in youth I said I hated him

And told him how it meant so much to me that we could make amends

His suffering gave me greater perspective

We threw his ashes into the ocean, how those waves he loved

Isn't it strange how we numb the pain often with what caused it

Such cycles are so easy to get caught in, now I move cautious

I say I love you every time I say goodbye, or at least I try

The present is both a gift and appropriately named

It's a blessing just to play the game
