Through my years growing up, I wanted to be just like you

Tall, strong, muscular and very athletic too

I always felt protected being in your care

Feeling very secure whenever you were there

Most of the time Mom was able to handle me

But every once in a while, in our family

The eight dreaded words I didn't want to hear

"You just wait until your father gets here"

You didn't have to say a word, fear would make me melt

All you had to do, was point to your belt

You never really hit me, but the message was clear

Change your attitude, or spanking time is here

You had a softer side and a giving side as well

Taking off your uniform, a difference I could tell

Underneath was a man as gentle as could be

Caring and loving as you bounced me on your knee

You spent a lot of time, teaching me to read

It certainly wasn't easy, your patience I did need

And I'd like to thank you for all of those wonderful hours

Coaching me in hockey, on that backyard rink of ours
