The shooting occurred only a few blocks from the hospital as the secretary working, the

front desk, had heard the shots

The driver and his friend, both African American males, sat motionless

They were uninjured

A young black female had already exited the back right seat and was screaming and holding

her wet bloody face

She was not shot

Debbie and I went around to the back of the car to the left door where the security guards

were trying to put on their gloves with trembling hands

Debbie woke Dr. Bracci up on her phone

What we were about to see was beyond words

In the back seat was a young African American female with her head down

She had beautiful long black curls and she was stylishly dressed

We later learned that the guys were taking her and her friend home from a baby shower

that they had just attended

The 9mm bullet was intended for the driver

There was blood and particles of brain matter splattered all over the back of the car

Debbie was steely calm and knew the woman was dead

She gingerly lifted her head from off her chest and at that point a bowl full of red

jello fell onto the woman's lap

Debbie quietly said

They shot her brains out and her face is gone

When we asked what we should do next, without hesitation, Debbie quietly replied

We will have the doctor pronounce her in the trauma room

We will not do this in the back seat of a car

This girl deserves dignity

And that was that

We thought

Diane had already come outside with a stretcher

Insecurity quickly took the girl and placed her lifeless body onto the stretcher

She was whisked away into the ED

At that point, I felt empty and helpless and was so sad about what had just happened

Unlike any other nurse, I wanted to do something

I looked over at the brick wall to the front of the car and saw the girlfriend wailing and banging her head

I wanted to help her, but I was not sure how

Insecurity was inside now

Then I thought, I know

I can find out the victim's name

I approached her and she looked at me with such an angry look that I became afraid that she would start beating on me

Nevertheless, a still calm voice inside told me to keep asking her her name and go ahead and touch her on the shoulder

I did and she looked into my eyes and murmured

She's pregnant
