Lyrics
Sometimes he walks in front of me,
Striding unabashedly
At other times, he lags behind
He seems to lead the way, but then
He hides beneath the trees again
As if . . . he can't make up his mind
At night he seems to disappear,
Abandons me to face my fear
But when the moonlight casts its glow,
He's right there on the ground below
I value his devotion, but I don't suppose
He really has a choice
And I imagine he might have
Some things to tell me . . . if he had a voice
Does he feel? Does he think?
Would he join me for a drink
If I were feeling out of sorts and disaffected?
Does he hear? Does he see?
Does he shake his head at me
And wonder why I stay so disconnected?
Sometimes I stop to think about
How different life might be without
My shadow, and sometimes I pretend
That like Gepetto's wooden boy,
He came to life and then what joy
I'd know, if my shadow were my friend
Would he feel? Would he think?
Would he join me for a drink
If I were feeling out of sorts and disaffected?
Would he hear? Would he see?
Would he shake his head at me
And wonder why I stay so disconnected?
Sometimes I stop to think about
How different life might be without
My shadow, and sometimes I pretend
That like Gepetto's wooden boy,
He came to life and then what joy
I'd know, if my shadow were my friend
