Through my sunglasses, I stare at the Wasatch Mountains, hovering overhead

When I walk up the hill stairs that climb

Like ancient steps worn into the green bamboo mountains of Nippon

All that is missing is a red torii at the base of the stairs to symbolize entrance to a holy place

The heavens and the earth, the universe, floats in between

Like a pitcher filling my dry mind with words of liquid wisdom

But it's not confined to granite or glass

My universe breathes

My universe is Mother

The learning of men fails in the end

As do friendships

And marriages

And lives

But nature!

Nature's teaching will never cease

It's me and the stairs and the mountains

Daily, I walk up these mountains and embrace my mother
