Lyrics
Sometimes I am terrified
What place does a wordsmith have
In a visually stimulated world
It's like the words I once loved
Are leaving
Like a boy leaves a girl
At a homecoming dance as he catches a glance
Across the room from another
Or as a man finds a lover only
To leave behind his mother
It's how I feel with poetry
Narratives and metaphors
Like I'm an explorer examining the contours
And surveying the meaning
Wrestling and teeming
I was never paying attention in class
Just always daydreaming
Of using a microphone and my mouth
To shift people's minds
I didn't need applause or amens
After my lines
I always pictured people sitting back
With light bulbs coming on
And a slight smirk being cracked
When they finally caught on
To the pictures I had drawn
Without ever using a paint brush
Such a euphoric feeling
As I made the brain rush
A new age Emerson or Hughes
Who can't be hushed
But the way the cultures moving
I wonder if I'll have my dreams crushed
Because it seems that the words
I once loved are leaving
With every double tap on each picture
We're continually caught
In the past moments shimmer
Reflections of a better day
Every time we press play
And the ten second videos pile up
And rob us of our today's
Turning them into tomorrow's
Filling me with much sorrow
Because I just was hoping that your mind I could borrow
As parchment to compose these ballads
Using words to create a new world
Shaping how your mind functions
With every story that I tell
And if I can't paint a picture with
Every word like a brush stroke
I'll feel like a journalist sitting
On the curb of who went broke
Because nobody read the articles
Into which he put all his time in
When Gutenberg meets Google age
Is staying OG a true sin
You know it's hard to be constantly pulled
By the age you live within
When you feel like that you were born
To bring the people back again
To some sort of language repentance
While their off paying penance
To the gifs and memes and snapchat
World that delivers me menace
I guess it's time to move on
Like the Youngstown steel workers had to do
When mass production flooded the scenes
And mass firings proceeded too
The words I once loved have left
Although they'll always have a place in my heart
This is the dead poets society
Of which now I am a part
I'm just another dead poet
I'm just another dead poet
I'm just another dead poet
Any other dead poets
I'm just another dead
I'm just another dead poet
Any other dead poets
Any other
Any other
I'm just another dead
I'm just another dead
I'm just another dead poet
Any other dead poets
Any other
Any other dead poets
Any other dead poets
Any other
Any other
I'm just another dead poet
I'm just another dead
I'm just another dead poet
