An ember decides if it's worth all the effort

Of clinging on to oxygen, the glow of indecision

To ignite once again, fuel the fire

Or maybe just sleep in

Ambition holds the hand of apathy

Pressing forward, then settling debris

A state a disrepair that I could try to fix if given time

When we both said "I do" then sped right on through

To our plans and our dreams

Didn't stop to think of what came next

But a decade of perspective has led to an intersection

To stop and rest my head awhile

Enjoy it all and fake a smile

Or blaze my way through the dark

With an ember and a spark

But the crackle in my lungs tells me there's work to do

A repetitious cycle over time of pain and growth and life

And if I hold a mirror to the sun

Bring some small sense of meaning to my life

Face to face with who I am

Finally my heart beats like I want it to

And my lungs are filled with air as they start breathing true

The joy and pain and grace I've yet to find is in the chapters left to write

And as I wrap my arms around my sons

I hold my daughter's hand as she learns to run

I gently fan the embers of their lives
