Near to an inn so crowded, long, long ago

Stood a forsaken stable, common and low;

There in a shadowed manger lay heavens newborn stranger

He, who had long been promised now had been born

Doves in the rafters high with soft melody

Beckoned the villagers to enter and see

He who had all created, Savior so long awaited

Came to the earth this blessed morn!

Hay in the darkened stalls was mellow and sweet,

Joseph himself kept vigil at Mary’s feet;

Here lowly shepherds found Him,

Oxen and sheep around Him

High overhead the stars were bright in the sky

O what a story they returned to proclaim

Earliest heralds of Messiah’s sweet name;

To us a Son is given, Jesus came down from heaven

Glory to God who reigns on high.
