Lyrics
It was beautiful in the city
The buildings were spires of copper and quartz glass
That shone like glitter in the sunlight
There was a sea made of diamonds
I could go whenever I wanted
All I had to do was close my eyes and I would find myself perched
On the highest tower with the wind whipping around me
Flying was as easy as breathing
I wore a different face there
There were only a few of us who lived in the city
But we would play games in the rainbow reflections
Turning ourselves into hard light and liquid mirrors
We would slip into each other and trade bodies back and forth
Until we couldn't remember which one we started with
We lived in peace until the day the city died
The copper melted and the glass was nothing but dust
The diamond turned to dry ice and sublimated in the heat
Until it was gone altogether
The others wouldn't tell me what had happened
We moved on
What else could we do
We found a new ocean, and built a house on the cliff above it
We hid
We stopped playing games
Sometimes we hated each other
I don't know if they forgot
Or if they couldn't let themselves remember
But we never spoke of our city again.
Sometimes I look out my window
Across our saltwater sea
And I swear I see copper glinting in the sunset
I swear the sea is diamond
