Yusuf Islam
In 1975 Cat Stevens experienced a momentous and life-changing event. Whilst swimming in the Pacific Ocean off Malibu he began to be swept out to sea. Fearing death he called to God pleading that should he be saved he would dedicate his life to God’s service. At that moment a gentle wave delivered him to the shore and safety. After receiving a copy of the Qur’an from his brother, he embraced Islam in 1977 and shortly afterwards changed his name to Yusuf Islam.
He went on to lead the way for Islamic Education in the UK establishing a boys and girls school and was the founder of charities specifically focusing on widows, orphans.
He pioneered the English Islamic nasheed genre producing much loved albums for children, including ‘A is for Allah’ and ‘I Look, I See’. And also produced the first spoken word productions in English on ‘The Life of the Last Prophet Muhammad’.
In the early 2000s Yusuf began to take the world stage again, the tragic loss of lives from wars meant that his 70s Peace Anthem, Peace Train was still relevant.
In 2003 he was awarded the World Social Award, followed by the Man of Peace award in 2004. In 2014 he was inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for his lifetime work in music and in 2019 into the Songwriters Hall of Fame....more

"Everytime, you feel like you cannot go on. You feel so lost that you're so alone. All you see is night and darkness all around. You feel so helpless that you can see which way to go. But don't despair and never lose hope. 'Cause Allah is always by your side.
