Strange Fruit

Uh, southern trees, bearing strange fruit

Blood on the leaves, blood at the roots

No longer hanging, but that strange fruit ain't make it far

They shoot out kids in the back and justify the cause

First, we were strange fruit, hanging from the poplar trees

Now those pastoral scenes, are urbanized with little means

By any means, teens chase things we never dreamed

They dreamed they might be a lawyer, I dreamed for 17

Years on this earth, or time to find my worth

They called me big, black, and ugly, undeserving of birth

Babies on shirts, while mommas cry, and we hold demonstrations

But who gon' wipe away her tears, fears, and frustrations
