Boomplay Awards Showcase: Willis Raburu
Media personality Willis Raburu's music career kicked off on a high note with his smash hit 'Kalale' breaking multiple records in the country. The song that features Ssaru, Breeder LW, Mejja and Rekles hit over 1 million streams on Boomplay and with that, he was on Monday, August 2nd presented with a plaque from Boomplay to celebrate this streaming milestone.
"I want to say a big thank you to anyone that has been streaming the song on Boomplay. 1 million is a big number be it in terms of money or streams" said Raburu after receiving his plaque at the Boomplay offices in Nairobi.
"We came up with the song Kalale to tell people to avoid bad vibes and energy and to see it perform the way it has is so amazing" he added.
Raburu thanked Boomplay for always supporting the Kenyan artistes and for providing them with a space to reach more people and sell their music.
"Boomplay is not only in Kenya but in many other countries. This has helped my music reach more people and that is good for growth. Kenya as a county embraces other cultures and I think it is time we are embraced in other cultures as well. It will be fun to see other people vibe to our music and genres" he said.
"More needs to be done for art and artistes and I am glad that platforms like Boomplay now exist in terms of revenue for artistes"..
Raburu also stated that thanks to Boomplay, his creativity has improved.
"It has helped me think about structures because when releasing a song, I know people will be listening. I now can't go below 1 million streams on any other song and this makes me try to push the creativity levels and balance that with some fun" he said.
"Boomplay has shown me the importance of having a close partner and ally at home".
So what's next for Willis Raburu?
He has promised fans a new album by the end of the year and a number of singles.
"The rest of the year is going to be a 'Bazu Year' and I mean it. We are working on some songs at Bazutainment (his label). We for instance partnered with H_Art the Band for the video to their song 'My Jaber'. My song with Ssaru, Rico Gang and Fathermoh of Mbuzi Gang will also come out soon. The aim is to have an album by the end of the year. I haven't decided on the name of the project but it is coming" he said.
"The album even has appearances from artistes from Nigeria, Rwanda and Tanzania".
With more music coming up, Willis Raburu is ready to break more milestones.
"There is more from where that came from and we are going to celebrate more millions".
