Las Mar is the brainchild, spirit vessel and physical labour of Nicholas Martyn. As a drummer in Melbourne's world-class music scene, Nick has worked with some of Australia's most renowned artists including Gotye, D.D Dumbo, Nai Palm (Hiatus Kaiyote), Matt Corby and Barney McAll. Since releasing his first EP as Las Mar in 2014, he has forged a completely singular sound funneling post-rock epicness, Afrobeat funkiness, drumming wizardry and general trippiness into songs and live improvisations.
Inspired by dispirate elements - surrealist painting, Afro-Cuban chants, sad-boy songs, The Funk, distant travels, electronic dance music - Las Mar has created a home for a unique artistic voice. Recording every sound from scratch using ageing keyboards, exotic strings and percussion, guitars, the human voice, his music has a totally unique production style - an epic sound from a DIY ethos.
Las Mar has performed live around Japan, Australia and Europe, utilising a sampling keyboard, drumkit and vocal mic to weave his songs with spontanious drum/synth/vocal improvisation.
Las Mar's 2nd LP is due for release mid-2020. The single Sif Ribi is out March 8th
