Sol Bishop

Sol Bishop is a self-professed late bloomer. The Melbourne based, North Queensland artist jokes that most rappers either find themselves early, or after a short stint don’t find themselves at all and quit.


Despite having some early career success supporting artists including All Day, Thundamentals, Illy, Bliss N Eso and international rappers including Xzibit, Sol struggled to find himself as he tried to make music that infused his unique upbringing from Queensland (he spent the bulk of his childhood on Thursday Island in the Torres Strait) with the city life of Melbourne that he now calls home.


“I wanted to be vulnerable, but also make music that can be fun and honours who I am and where I come from”.


But it’s this that has started to finally colour his work. Whether it’s the flashes of 4am Melbourne night-life in the trap track Horseshoe, the job-site banter and sunny Queenslander swagger that sneaks into crowd-pleasers like Handful, or the heartbreaking agony of tracks like Idols, which asks, in a post-Mac Miller-world where our artistic heroes are slayed by addiction - what hope do we have of helping our youth navigate issues of their own mental health - Sol Bishop is building a music experience that feels true to the vision of honouring who he is.


With the arrival of this EP, it’s clear that Sol Bishop may be a late bloomer, but it’s made his work all the richer for it.
