Papa Udeme was born on May 23, 1995, in Southern Nigeria. Growing up as a kid in a family of four (later turned 5), Papa rather kept his admiration and love for music discreet till much later when he was about 10.
Just like most parents in Africa, Papa's parents did not want a "music man" in their family because of the predominant and stereotypic belief of music not being a very prestigious field of endeavor in contemporary African society.
His parents instead wanted him to engage in something more "respectable" like medicine and law - if he ever wanted to be a musician, it should be in the church alone. This only pushed Papa closer to the church - being the only way he could embrace, develop, and express his artistry.
He got his earliest form of formal music education from the church. After completing his secondary education in Southern Nigeria, Papa went on to study music at the university. He successfully got a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Music.
Papa also founded an independent radio program known as "Never Heard Of" on local radio. This was a program that focused on telling the African story and also promoting unheard independent black musicians to young and old audiences in Africa and overseas.
Papa Udeme is also a writer and he loves telling the African story. Papa describes his music as "Natural and truly African." Papa Udeme currently resides in Nigeria. He owns a recording studio where he writes, produces, and records his music....more
