The Movies
Larson and Tellijohn recorded the band’s debut album, Nothin's on Its Way, in late 1995 at Pachyderm Studio and then self-released it in 1996 on Larson’s Gambit Records label. The album, featuring a range of mainly acoustic indie-rock tracks, was dubbed by the Minneapolis Star Tribune as “a fully realized and captivating debut.”
In the years that followed, bassist Jason Tako joined the band for live performances and in the recording of material that was eventually released via their second album, Sway, in 2016. Although heavier and more electrified, Sway retains the melodic tunes and melancholic lyrics that characterize the first release.
Larson, an award-winning poet and fiction writer, is the principal lyricist and lead vocalist, while Tellijohn has done most of the arranging and production of the band's music. After the recording of Sway, The Movies went dormant for a number of years: Tako moved out of the region, while Larson and Tellijohn shifted their attention to the raising of their young families.
With the recent release of Sway (and the re-release of Nothin's on Its Way), Larson is considering a third release of previously recorded songs, as well as a return to the studio to record new material.
Stay tuned.
