Ash The Author

Chicago born rapper and producer Ash the Author was raised on a healthy diet of bars and harmonies. He comes from a lineage of melody makers and lyricists: His grandfather being a conga player and his Grandmothother being a poet. His father and uncle were founders of the reggae group, One Love, who helped usher in the budding reggae scene in Chicago during the late 80’s and performed with artists like Black Uhuru, Steel Pulse, Burning Spear and Gill Scott Heron. Ash’s first performances were in a south side Chicago living room performing rap classics such as Snoop Dogg's "Murder was the Case". As a youth, Ash relocated with his mother to Oceanside, CA, where he was introduced to funk and west coast rap. His step-father, another musician, vocalist and songwriter, introduced him to recording by building him a computer and installing music software and a turntable, and in his teens, inspired by Rawkus era hip-hop, he began to write lyrics and record music. After high school, Ash moved back to south side Chicago and teamed up with Derty Red and other local acts to produce the Ill State Mixtape Vol 1. in 2005. Ash the Author paints true school 90's golden age hip-hop lyrics and heartfelt, thoughtful musings over modern palates to create a both playful and deep, modern and retro, tongue-in-cheek but conscious landscape for listeners to get lost in.
