Cleveland’s Dead Leaves has been making snarling, transfiguring alternative rock since 2014. Between the thorny guitars of their self-titled debut and the nocturnal posture of their 2017 full-length “Vultures”, the quartet has reinvigorated and reconfigured their attitude with each release. In less than five years, they’ve darted between spry character sketches and wistful internal monologues with a flick of their wrists. The band has returned with a set of singles—their second in two years—which build on the foliage collected since the first bloom.
“Congratulations” is a smoky, jagged guitar pop track built on a stuttering rhythm before a solo thunders through the haze. “Twisted Tongue” offers a more energetic take on 2020 Dead Leaves, where cross-cut guitars lead the charge until they skid to a halt.
