Lukwatsss’ life was very different. After spending years as a goalkeeper in Fulham’s academy alongside football’s rising star Ryan Sessegnon, he was released. Trials at other clubs resulted in the same conclusion: he had the ability and the attitude, but he simply wasn’t tall enough to be offered a professional contract.


“I was one of the players who had been there the longest, and I had a really tough time coming to terms with that,” he admits. “I didn’t want to do anything else but football, but God did me a favour and the next thing I tried worked.”


Music had been one of Lukwatsss’ hobbies for years, but it was always overshadowed by the demands of football. Inspired by MoStack and J Hus, he made music his new focus last September and connected with producer Nathaniel London via YouTube. ‘Mona Lisa’ was written just two months later.


Music has given Lukwatsss a fresh opportunity to triumph over the end of his football career. His story also involves a couple of other unlikely coincidences. A friend recently surprised Lukwatsss by trawling through his old Tweets and finding that he Tweeted “Mona Lisa” four years before he’d even written the song. And he was also featured in an old Fulham match day programme, in which he said that he’d want to be a rapper if he wasn’t a footballer.


“I don’t want to jinx it,” he says, with a broad smile sweeping across his face, “but I think that God’s giving me something there.”
