Thugs Unit are a conscious rap and hip-hop duo from India. Formed in 2006 by Mo Boucher (Atishbaz) and Irish Boi, Thugs Unit were the first hip-hop group established in Hyderabad and are regarded as India’s finest, most seasoned versatile rappers. Drawing influence from old school hip-hop culture and emcee style, Thugs Unit are known for their fusion beats, thought-provoking messaging and signature multilingual lyrics that switch between Urdu, English and Jamaican Patois.
In 2006, Mo Boucher became the first emcee to introduce Jamaican Raggamuffin flavour to the Indian hip-hop scene through his reggae-inspired music making Hyderabad the birthplace of homegrown reggae. Because rap was inherited from the west, most Indian artists only rapped in English - in 2008, Thugs Unit pioneered rapping in Urdu.
The duo first met when Irish Boi, who organised hip-hop events and parties under ‘Thugs Unit’, called Mo Boucher to perform at one of his parties. The two struck up a friendship and began making songs together, eventually releasing a number of mixtapes. Their first mixtape was “The Beginning” (2008), followed by “The Movement” (2010) and "Poets Word" (2012). Their new album, “Resurrection 040” (2020), features lead single ‘Atishbazi’ - a boom bap anthem that calls out global socio-political issues with fierce lyrical skill....more
