Man at Sea

Man at Sea is the moniker of Bristol based singer/songwriter David Hewson. Described as a cross between Rufus Wainwright and Thom Yorke, his songs combine sparse arrangements with soaring melodies, shot through with lyrics that have an existential thread and always a dark undertone, dealing with themes of identity and the modern-day sense of a loss of spirituality.

Growing up by the sea in a small village on the coast of the Isle of Wight he began playing music and writing songs at an early age and by 16 was distributing homemade DIY CD’s recorded in the back room of his garage on a zoom 8-track recorder borrowed from school.

Moving to London to study acting, Hewson formed his first band The Kid Jones, named after one of the nicknames his older brother gave him growing up. Catchy chorus driven songs like Juliet, On and On and Greenlight became staple favourites amongst loyal fans. They went on to win the Jar Music Breakout Competition in 2010, beating thousands of bands nationwide to win the prize of playing the Breakout Festival on Male in the Maldives.

Moving to Bristol in 2017 he began performing locally as Man at Sea and in 2019 released his first 4 track EP Minotaur, receiving critical praise and a feature on BBC introducing in the West. His new single Ghost Song marks his much anticipated follow up securing his place as an Artist to watch in the current new wave of emerging Bristol singer/songwriters.
