He was raised with his older brother by his parents until he was 13, when his father was shot dead. Emotionally disturbed by the death of his father, Hernandez started to act out and was eventually expelled from school in the 8th grade for bad behavior. He started working various odd jobs such as working as a busboy to help his mother financially. 6ix9ine also dealt drugs to supplement his income. He was eventually arrested for his criminal activities and sentenced to prison where he began to associate himself with the Nine Trey Gangsters, a prison subset of the Bloods street gang.
Hernandez began his career as a rapper in 2014, releasing songs such as "69" and "Scumlife". After being released early from a prison sentence, the rapper funneled some of his harrowing experiences into the songs on his 2020 sophomore album Tattletales
Hernandez has recorded with the likes of Yung Beef, Trippie Redd, and Mo Dollaz.His aggressive single "Gooba" was released in May on the rapper's 24th birthday and debuted at number three on the Billboard charts. The next month he returned with new single "Trollz," a collaboration with Nicki Minaj. Both songs appeared on second studio album Tattletales, which was released in September of 2020.
