Evripidis and His Tragedies

Evripidis and His Tragedies is the work of Evripidis Sabatis of Athens and Barcelona. It’s a vehicle for his brand of highly melodic, confessional, melancholic, queer, darkly humorous songs. In them, love, lust, and loss intertwine; hope and despair walk hand in hand with sarcasm; joie de vivre coexists with tragedy; men are sexy and elusive; summers are long, and lazy, and cruel; night-time is either wild or full of ghosts; childhood is mischievous and dearly missed; friendship is forever; and the dead take the living for rides in cars.

Evripidis is a classically trained pianist, writer and illustrator from Athens whose heart led him to Barcelona, where he has become a permanent fixture of the local scene. His music is keyboard-driven pop, sometimes sunny and sometimes dark, sometimes heartfelt and sometimes tongue in cheek. He has released four records, one of them in Greek, full of vocal harmonies and baroque instrumentation. His next project takes more of a synth pop direction and it is due for release next year.

Influenced by artists as diverse as The Beach Boys, 60´s girl groups like the Shirelles and the Shangri-Las, The Magnetic Fields, Pulp, Jens Lekman, Scott Walker, Kate Bush, Marc Almond, Pet Shop Boys, Nico, and J.S.Bach to name a few, the music is diverse, rich in texture and smart, with unconventional song structures and unexpected harmonies.
